Jamie Scarrow

With over a decade working in the field as an adventure tourism guide and naturalist, Jamie Scarrow has gained an amazing understanding of the natural world.  He began his career as a naturalist guide in Knight Inlet, a coastal fiord in British Columbia, which is home to a healthy population of Grizzly bears, Bald eagles and Orca (Killer Whales).  Over twelve years at Knight Inlet Jamie developed a deep understanding of the natural instincts of wild animals and this has allowed him to capture truly unique and intimate wildlife images.  For five years, Jamie also worked in Churchill, Manitoba as a polar bear guide and naturalist; and in the past four years, his winters have been spent as guide, naturalist and zodiac driver in Antarctica.  Jamie is an ambassador for the conservation and protection of the natural world.  Through photography Jamie attempts to express the beauty and importance of some of the world’s most fragile ecosystems and most vulnerable animals.  His wildlife images have a unique feel to them, often showing the less understood side of his animal subjects. This distinguishes his work from that of other wildlife photographers.  Guiding has allowed Jamie to spend limitless amounts of time with the wildlife he photographs and through this he has learned important lessons for photographing wildlife, including patience, waiting for just the right moment and, of utmost importance, understanding animal behavior.  Guiding has also allowed Jamie to work closely with many famous photographers and film crews from both National Geographic and the BBC, notably, Thomas D. Mangelsen, a prominent photographer and a favorite of Jamie’s. These experiences provided Jamie with a wealth of photographic knowledge.  Jamie has refined his photography skills through advanced training workshops and thousands of hours out in the field.  With an ability to look through the lens and truly capture the unique character of his subjects, and the fresh untouched beauty of pristine landscapes, Jamie’s work has received worldwide acclaim.  Jamie’s photographs have been published in many notable magazines such as National Geographic Adventure, Canadian Geographic and in Nature Conservancy.

As cofounder of Wild Focus Tours, Jamie is thrilled at the chance to introduce Wild Focus guests to pristine natural environments and stunning wildlife photography opportunities.  His photography instruction style is casual, fun, practical and tailored to each individual guest.  In addition to advising on the optimum camera settings, Jamie also enhances the travel experience by providing insight into the local history, culture, flora and fauna of the location. Jamie’s photography workshops are relaxed, informative, entertaining and interactive.  He believes that with an understanding of the equipment and an appreciation on the natural environment, every photographer has the ability to capture spectacular travel images.  Working with amateur and semi-professional photographers over the last decade of his travels, Jamie appreciates the value of taking home memorable photographs; however he also understands how important it is for Wild Focus guests to really look beyond the lens and truly absorb the brilliance of the natural world.

Jamie works with travel experts, wildlife guides, naturalists and travelers from around the world to design unparalleled Wild Focus photography tours.  He makes sure wild Focus guests are taken only to the most impressive locations with exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.  At Wild Focus, Jamie also develops the photography workshops and provides in-field instruction.  With years of naturalist experience, enhanced by the completion of a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Biology and Chemistry), Jamie offers Wild Focus’ guests a wealth of knowledge and insight beyond the lens.

With a playful and adventurous nature, Jamie inspires all around him to explore, discover and capture amazing images of the natural world.  Jamie is truly the photography and natural world expert behind Wild Focus.  He brings a positive and peaceful element to the Wild Focus team and simply loves the lifestyle of a photography tour expert.  He is committed to providing Wild Focus guests with an unforgettable travel photography experience and looks forward to seeing guests improve their photography techniques.
